What they did in 2013: Pacific Rim

What they’re doing in 2014: Crimson Peak

Why we’re excited:

A horror film that doesn’t involve any footage being found? That’s an appealing prospect in itself. But add Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro, a sizzling cast, a crumbling mansion in Cumbria, plus a 19th Century setting and ghost story Crimson Peak looks set to seriously spook cinemagoers.

Del Toro, who is currently writing a sequel to Pacific Rim, starts shooting in February 2014 and cites movies like The Shining and The Exorcist as inspiration. Presumably funding for the project would have been immediately withdrawn if he’d said The Happening and The Last Exorcism Part 2.

Alice In Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska stars as a young author who grows deeply suspicious about her husband and his sister, played by Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain.

As anyone who saw Del Toro’s Oscar-winning fantasy Pan’s Labyrinth should know, the director is a master at building tension and creepy atmospherics. It’s thrilling to see him tackle more adult subject matter after the robots vs monsters throwaway frolics of Pacific Rim.
