Tom Hiddleston Wins Anglo Fan Favorites for Second Straight Year

By staff | Posted on August 29th, 2013

Tom Hiddleston is the first repeat winner of an Anglo Fan Favorites title.

Congratulations to Tom Hiddleston, who has won his second straight title as Anglo Fan Favorites Man of the Year. He defeated 2011 champion Alan Rickman 56 to 44 percent. The two actors traded leads for much of last weekend, but Hiddleston eventually extended a comfortable margin over Rickman, which he maintained through to the finish line.

Hiddleston, best known for his role as villainous Loki in the Thor films and The Avengers, has inspired a formidable following in a relatively short period of time. (The first Thor film was released in 2011.) His dominance in this year’s tournament raises the question — can anyone beat this guy?

Benedict Cumberbatch, runner-up to Hiddleston last year and the presumptive favorite this year, defeated Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith for third place 64 to 36 percent.

Festival – Special Presentation

Skip to schedule and film credits

A reclusive, Bowie-like rock star (Tom Hiddleston) — who also happens to be a centuries-old vampire — has his moody, nocturnal reverie disturbed by clamouring fans, a visit from his bloodsucking belle (Tilda Swinton) and the jibes of her irascible sister (Mia Wasikowska), in the eagerly anticipated new film from American indie icon Jim Jarmusch.

In what marks a distinctive change of pace, American indie icon Jim Jarmusch turns to the vampire genre to fashion this gorgeously conceived and idiosyncratic film that nevertheless bears all the trademarks of his work to date: hip, stylized, erudite and acerbic in just the right ways. Starring the incomparable Tilda Swinton, the chameleonic Mia Wasikowska (also at the Festival in Tracks and The Double), and Tom Hiddleston in a major departure, Only Lovers Left Alive occupies a claustrophobic, languid nocturnal world befitting vampires who live a counter-normal existence. Centuries old, they have seen it all, and simply want to be left alone to get on with their (eternal) lives.

Adam (Hiddleston) is a reclusive, Bowielike rock star, whose only wish is to avoid his adoring fans and write and play his music, which these days tends towards the funereal. Eve (Swinton) is his lady belle, who leaves her closest friend, Christopher Marlowe (John Hurt), to travel halfway around the world to be with her lover and live in a ramshackle mansion-cum-recording studio on the outskirts of Detroit. Their reverie is troubled, not just by the fans who close in on and keep vigil outside Adam’s hideaway, but also by Eve’s irascible sister (Wasikowska).

Music, not surprisingly, centres the film, but Jarmusch’s net is cast wider here. Having lived so long, Adam and Eve can count amongst their acquaintances the crème de la crème of artists and scientists — Byron, Shelley, Kepler, Darwin, Copernicus — none of whom make an appearance, but all of whom are invoked in tones of nostalgia for a glorious past that our vampires can never repeat. Hypnotic, dreamlike, mesmerizing… Jarmusch is a master of moody reverie.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ Is An ‘Avengers’ Sequel, Tom Hiddleston Says

Hear about the MTV Movie Awards winner’s hopes for a Hulk rematch, and watch an exclusive trailer cutdown for our Fall Movie Preview.

By Josh Wigler (@RoundHoward) with reporting by Brett White

Indeed, Hiddleston rejoins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as soon as November’s “Thor: The Dark World,” a project the actor describes as “a sequel to ‘Avengers’ as much as it is to ‘Thor.’” (You can see an exclusive trailer cutdown for “Thor: The Dark World below.)

“It’s a roller coaster, no question,” Hiddleston told MTV News during our recent Fall Movie Preview interview. “It’s full of ups and downs and loop-de-loops and twists and turns. It will take you to places you haven’t seen before.”

In the upcoming “Thor” sequel, the titular God of Thunder brings his hammer to bear upon Malekith the Accursed, leader of a forgotten foe known as the Dark Elves. “They have an ancient, ancient grudge against Asgard and against the reign of Odin, and they’re back,” Hiddleston described of the “massive and threatening” enemies facing Thor this time around.

But never count Loki out of the fight. Even as most eyes are turned toward Malekith, Hiddleston’s very own mischief-maker remains a thorn in his brother’s side.

“Loki has a very complicated relationship with Thor,” Hiddleston said of his role in the film. “He is an agent of chaos without equal in the world he inhabits. He knows his true nature. He knows he doesn’t belong in the family of Asgard, and he’s locked away in the beginning of the film in the deepest, darkest recesses of the dungeon as public enemy number one.”

It’s not long before foe becomes friend, however, as Thor and Loki are forced to forge an unlikely alliance against Malekith. “Lo and behold, Asgard needs his help,” the actor teased. “That’s going to be a very complicated allegiance.”

Beyond “The Dark World,” Loki’s place in the Marvel Universe is murky. Joss Whedon has confirmed that the villain isn’t part of his planned “Avengers” sequel, leaving many fans wondering where they’ll get their Loki fix after November. Hiddleston’s lips are sealed regarding the character’s future, except to say there’s still one score he hopes to settle.

“I do feel like there’s some unfinished business between Loki and the Hulk,” he said. “I feel like he didn’t get a fair fight.”

Whether Loki gets another chance at a “fair fight” remains to be seen. “Who knows,” he said. “You’ll have to see what happens in ‘The Dark World’ to find out where Loki finishes up.”
